Simon Rickard - Horticultural & Gardening Festival 2015

Simon Rickard

Sponsored by Botanica World Discoveries

I am a passionate gardener and plantsman. I was the head gardener at the Diggers Club until 2009, overseeing the magnificent gardens at Heronswood and the Garden of St Erth, where we grew everything from the humblest lettuce to the grandest herbaceous borders, to historic trees.

Until 2012 I worked as a market gardener, establishing Annie Smithers’ food garden and growing bespoke produce for her well-loved restaurants.

Like all of us, my back is not getting any younger, so these days I do more brain work and less back work. I run my own garden consultancy and coaching business, helping gardeners of any level to hone their skills. I lead international garden tours for Botanica World Discoveries, and I deliver lectures and workshops for, amongst others, the Australian Landscape Conference and Burnley College’s perennially popular Discovering Horticulture course. I have two books to my name; The New Ornamental Garden (2011) and Heirloom Vegetables - a guide to their history and varieties (2014).

As if all that isn’t enough, I maintain a parallel career as a classical musician, specialising in renaissance and baroque bassoons.
