For the first time in 2016, as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact, Wonderland will be carbon neutral. This move by Wonderland follows in the footsteps of Coachella, OutsideLands, Glastonbury and Sasquatch, who have all introduced green initiatives to their festivals in recent times.

Australia’s per capita carbon dioxide emissions are almost five times the world average. By purchasing offsets that fund projects that avoid, reduce or remove greenhouse gases emissions elsewhere in the world, Wonderland will positively compensate for the unavoidable carbon emissions we generate via our festival. We will track and offset all carbon emissions during Wonderland, incl. flights for performers, artist transport, catering, hotel accommodation, waste and paper, and Wonderland will then purchase carbon offsets compliant with the National Carbon Offset Standard for footprint reconciliation post-event.  As well as measuring Wonderland’s footprint and purchasing offsets, the festival’s organisers plan to do as much as possible – from planning to execution to aftermath – to reduce the carbon footprint of Wonderland.

Before the Event

Public Transport – Wonderland has chosen a venue that’s centrally located and thus easily accessible by public transport, In a further bid to reduce the event’s carbon footprint. Via the festival’s extensive socials, Wonderland will be encouraging festivalgoers to leave their cars at home, and take public transport to the event, where they can make the quick walk from the Subiaco Train Station to Kitchener Park.

Very limited use of printed materials – Wonderland’s marketing and advertising will all be digital, and we won’t be distributing printed programs on the day.

During Event Day

Trash Talks Incentive – for the second year running, Wonderland will implement the recycling incentive we’ve dubbed ‘trash talks’, whereby punters at the event can exchange their empty cans and cups for drink tokens to be spent at the Wonderland bar.

There will be recycling bins throughout the event.

We will be encouraging all food and beverage suppliers to use recycled materials, and donate leftover food following the event.

After the Event

Planting trees to offset carbon emissions – A team of Wonderland staff will planted trees as a contribution to the offset of carbon emissions generated by Wonderland, in collaboration with Carbon Neutral’s Plant-A-Tree program. These trees will absorb carbon and will become a biodiverse forest in W.A.
